About me
Why I became a supervisor
Watch Now“I now want to offer and pass on some of what I have learnt to my supervisees…”
Hi I’m Martin Rigby and I’m a qualified counsellor, certified supervisor, accredited mindfulness teacher and experienced workshop presenter. I bring over 20 years of professional experience working as a therapist to supervision.
I work with young people, adults and couples. Due to my personal life experience I specialize in counselling people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. I have previously worked for a young people’s counselling service, volunteered for Samaritans and have undertaken placements in schools, a homeless charity, victim support organisation and a Sure Start family centre.
Having worked for over 10 years in private practice where I have gained significant experience of working with a wonderful diversity of clients, I then decided that I wanted to take the next professional step in my journey and move into the world of supervision. Throughout my career I’ve received supervision from some great supervisors who have all contributed to my development as a therapist, supported me through the ups and downs and celebrated my successes with me. I believe being held and being allowed to be myself in supervision has helped me to be the therapist I am today and I now want to offer and pass on some of what I have learnt to my supervisees to enable them to realize their own full potential and make a real difference to the lives of their clients.
Whether you are looking for interim supervision arrangements while your supervisor is away or ill, a second supervisor to meet the needs of your expanding client work or a long-term supervisor who you can build a relationship with of trust and understanding, I may be able to help.

Supervision is a professional relationship which helps you as a trainee or qualified counsellor/psychotherapist to reflect on different aspects of the therapeutic relationship, and aspects outside the session which influence your work. The BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice defines counselling supervision as:
“A specialised form of mentoring provided for practitioners responsible for undertaking challenging work with people. Supervision is provided to ensure standards, oversee quality, enhance learning, stimulate creativity and support the sustainability and resilience of the work being undertaken.”
What I offer as a supervisor?
- Supervision for counsellors in private practice
- Supervision for counselling students studying at Level 4 and above (providing reports to support your study as required)
- Supervision within agency and organisation
- Supervision of supervision
What can you expect from me as your supervisor?
“I would love to be with you, learn about you, help you to further learn about yourself…”

If you choose to have supervision with me ethics and sound ethical decision-making will be at the heart of our sessions together. This is important to help keep you and your clients safe. As a registered member of the BACP, my supervision practice is informed by the BACP Ethical Framework 2018.
I aim to offer a supportive supervisory relationship where you can explore your client work, your feelings in relation to your clients and any other concerns, in an atmosphere that is non-judgemental, purposeful and respectful.
Whether you are a student at the start of your counselling career, a newly qualified counsellor looking to set up in private practice or an experienced therapist wanting to develop and grow your therapy practice or perhaps work towards accreditation, I could be the right supervisor for you to help you take those next steps.
As your supervisor I will offer a reflective space to assist you and ensure that your way of working feels right for you. We are all individuals, have different needs and I aim to tailor supervision to your requirements. I would love to be with you, learn about you, help you to further learn about yourself, understand your clients and see how you are experiencing both the changes and development this type of work can bring. My role is to help you to develop your own identity and style as a counsellor. If you decide to have supervision with me you will find me warm, approachable, encouraging and non-judgemental.
My supervision training and approach
“I believe that a healthy and supportive relationship between therapist and supervisor is essential for safe, aware and creative client work”
I completed my Advanced Certificate in Clinical Supervision (including Online and Telephone Working) in 2024 through Counselling Tutor. This training is mapped to the supervision competencies set by Association for Counselling and Therapy Online (ACTO), the National Counselling Society (NCS) and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am therefore qualified to supervise practitioners face-to-face, online and by phone.
My supervision approach is underpinned by combining my person-centred values with an active use of the seven-eyed process model, originally developed by Peter Hawkins and Robin Shohet, as well as other models. I would describe myself as supervisee-centred, warm and friendly, always prepared to adapt my approach to work with different needs and I work collaboratively and flexibly with supervisees at all stages of their career. I believe that a healthy and supportive relationship between therapist and supervisor is essential for safe, aware and creative client work.

Supervision is currently available in-person, online (Zoom) or telephone.
In-person supervision appointments are normally conducted in the quiet, comfortable and confidential space of my home conservatory in Lostock Hall (PR5).
Alternatively if you have childcare commitments, have mobility issues, find it hard to travel or just want to experience working in different ways, you may opt to have supervision remotely. I particularly recommend that if you work with clients online or by phone it is important ethically to have some of your supervision through these media.
Supervision appointments can be booked weekdays Mon-Fri 9am-9pm. I don’t work weekends or Bank Holidays.
The initial supervision appointment
“I believe choosing a supervisor is one of the most important decisions you will ever make as a therapist…”
I offer initial supervision meetings for trainee or qualified therapists who feel they may be interested in having supervision with me, now or in the future, and would like to find out more. Initial supervision meetings are free of charge, conducted face-to-face, online or by phone, last 30 minutes and give prospective supervisees the opportunity to discuss their needs, experience my supervision approach, find out how I work and decide if they feel comfortable working with me. This is a relaxed, get-to-know you session and there is no obligation to continue. It is an opportunity to see if we are a good fit and I’m always happy to answer any questions, what I offer and what to expect from me as a supervisor.
I believe choosing a supervisor is one of the most important decisions you will ever make as a therapist and for that reason I encourage you to take the time you need to consider and reflect on if I am the right supervisor for you and your practice. If your answer is yes we will agree when you would like me to start working with you and I will then send you my supervision working agreement. I have different supervision agreements depending on whether you are a trainee or qualified counsellor and I will make this available to you in your preferred format (print, electronic or audio). Alternatively we can contract verbally if that works better and is more accessible for you.
The supervision agreement contains the terms and conditions for our work together, the boundaries of our supervisory relationship and our individual responsibilities as supervisor and supervisee. I ask that you complete and return this supervision working agreement before your first appointment. Once you have agreed to work with me I will invite you to make advance payment to confirm the session.
